ACTION ALERT: Add your name to the petition for the 100% Soil-Healthy Farming Bill in Minnesota

ACTION NEEDED:

Submit a petition signature urging Governor Tim Walz, agency leaders, and Minnesota legislative leadership to pass the 100% Soil-Healthy Farming bill.

How much time it takes:

2 minutes.

The situation:

Farmers are on the front lines of the climate crisis – battling extreme weather and changing seasons while also building soil health to sequester carbon and soak up excess water. Land Stewardship Project drafted a bill built by farmers from the ground-up that will set a goal to incentivize and provide the resources needed to achieve 100% Soil Healthy Farming:

  • 50% of Minnesota farmers implementing soil-healthy practices by 2030.

  • 100% of Minnesota farmers implementing soil-healthy practices by 2035.

  • 100% of grazable and tillable acres in soil-healthy practices by 2040.

By ensuring soil-healthy practices are profitable from day one through accessible and motivating grants and direct payments, Minnesota's countryside will be abundant with managed rotationally grazed livestock, perennial cropping systems, cover cropping systems, and no-till.

WHY GREENER PASTURES LIKES THIS BILL:

Managed rotational grazing is a pasture-based livestock practice that keeps animals out of factory farms and on fresh pasture while building soil health. We need a food system where all animal agriculture is pasture-based and sustainable, and this bill incentivizes soil-healthy practices like rotational grazing. Plus, soil health is critical for our water and climate. And, we love that this bill moves MN forward while prioritizing socially disadvantage and smaller farms.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Add your name to the petition, which will be delivered to Gov. Walz and relevant staff, cabinet members, and MN legislative leadership, in March, 2021.
